Judd Apatow just teamed up with HBO for an incredible 2-part documentary about Judd’s friend and mentor, Garry Shandling. The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling reveals the drive behind the late comedian, and how, after conquering the world with It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and The Larry Sanders Show he became a behind-the-scenes mentor to what seems like everyone in the comedy community and beyond. Many of us knew about Shandling’s public efforts, but not as many of us know about how much counsel he’s given to so many.
Apatow released an extra clip of video he collected for the documentary, one that shows a post-Larry Sanders Garry Shandling working on new material in the green room of The Comedy And Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, CA – a night where Shandling, Kevin Nealon, Jerry Seinfeld, and Chris Rock were on the lineup and a full blown conversation about the art of stand-up comedy happens backstage between Shandling and Seinfeld. Watch as two people who are great at what they do talk about how they try to make that thing great.
Bonus! Here’s Apatow discussing this specific green room clip with Joe Rogan from an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience last year when he was still working on the documentary. The footage came from the producers of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedian as they were documenting him in the early 2000s.
