Get in the mood for “Master of None” with a playlist from the show’s music supervisor

Aziz Ansari’s Netflix series Master of None, which just debuted its second season, is a work of art on many levels: with bright, crisp cinematography and design that’s an obvious homage to (among others) the New Wave films that inspired its creators, the heavily self-aware comedy is as beautiful to watch as it is emotionally wrenching. With episodes exploring the immigrant experience, our generation’s disdain for our parents, and the unavoidable pain of relationships, Ansari’s series isn’t afraid to be real between jokes.
Master of None’s soundtrack goes a long way towards setting the pitch-perfect tone, and so before you dive into season two – out as of this week on Netflix – get in the mood with this mini playlist curated by the show’s music supervisor, Zach Cowie.
Cowie shared five tunes that set the scene for season two, telling Variety how much he loves working on the series with co-creators Ansari and Alan Yang (a former Parks and Rec producer who has his own musical background, having helmed several hit poppunk bands around Boston in the early 00s): “I’ve never felt a stronger sense of collaboration and such a high level of trust in each other’s instincts. We’ve all been good about throwing our egos out the door and truly working together to find the best musical ideas to support the story we’re trying to tell.”
