GQ photographed Kyle Mooney’s impressive VHS collection

In a profile for GQ Style, notoriously shy SNL star Kyle Mooney opened up – about his eclectic wardrobe, that is, and his insanely fringe vintage VHS collection.
Mooney tells the mag all about his favorite outfits, which include a fuzzy Alf sweater he wears in cautious moderation and a vast collection of tacky X-mas tops. He’s a big thrift shopper, in general, and it shows not just in his wardrobe, but in his obsession with collecting things – first, he explains, it was figurines, as a kid. Then came baseball cards. Now, as an adult, Mooney’s amassed perhaps his biggest collection yet – an extensive set of VHS tapes he’s been hoarding since childhood.
But Mooney’s got something other hobby collectors don’t – access to the stars he used to idolize, which makes for some fun backstage moments at SNL:
Now the new fun thing with that is that people will come through SNL or through other jobs I’ve had, so the new era of collecting for me is that I can try to get these things autographed which is very exciting for me. Michael Keaton came to host the show last year and I got him to sign our family’s original copy of Beetlejuice—the VHS still has the price tag on it: $39.95—which is pretty crazy….
Alec Baldwin has obviously been on the show a lot so he signed the Beetlejuice VHS as well. He was like, “You know what? He [Keaton] signed it wrong.” This video cassette, it’s a clam shell, it has a clear plastic on it and the sleeve is basically underneath the clear plastic. I think they basically, the rental place, probably Primetime video (which is in San Diego where I grew up) I think they cut open the cardboard case and then flipped that into the clamshell. Alec went to the trouble of pulling the sleeve out and signing it “correctly” according to him, which I found funny.
