“Here’s The Scenario” is your next comedy podcast obsession
August 29, 2022 Mike Seigel Brendan Sagalow, Features, Here's The Scenario, Mike Cannon, Mike Feeney
If you’ve ever found yourself sitting around with your friends answering “what ifs” you are not alone. For anyone whose played a game of “F-Marry-Kill” or “would you rather?” the podcast Here’s the Scenario is here for you. It’s three NYC comedians on a quest to answer life’s greatest questions. Hosted by Mike Feeney, Mike Cannon, and Brendan Sagalow the podcast takes a simple theme instead of breaking down a historical event or discuss the political news of the day, their goal instead is just to have a good time and explore all things silly. The three comics riff off each other and take the conversation’s tangent wherever they may go, which often happens to be the most hilarious of places.
The three comedian friends have with more than two decades of comedy experience between them and are in fact, they’re all accomplished stand-ups in their own right. Feeney dropped his first comedy album, Rage Against The Routine in 2019 and is a national headliner who recently created the popular “Welcome To” series, acting as a tour guide checking in a new traveler to a state or city while running through its stereotypes like Florida, Seattle, New Jersey, or Colorado racking up more than 75 million total views.
Brendan Sagalow’s career is on the rise as well. At the beginning of 2021, he released his first comedy album, Not Now More Than Ever which he self-funded and recorded on an NYC rooftop during COVID, with that more gigs came, and just this past July he landed one of the much-coveted New Faces selections at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival.
Mike Cannon is the perhaps the most veteran comedian of the trio, a regular podcast and radio guest when he’s not headlining the country. Two years ago he dropped his first self-funded comedy special, Life Begins addressing new fatherhood and getting passed at NY’s famed Comedy Cellar which features some hilarious interstitials with the Cellar’s regulars. Cannon followed that up in 2022 by dropping two self-released stand-up specials – White Privilege Homeless and Mike Cannon’s Huge Mistake, the latter being the directorial debut of the show’s producer, Nicole Lyons.
The podcast began as a Patreon-only podcast (under the previous name What’s The Scenario) during COVID. Feeney and Cannon were hosting the Irish Goodbye podcast and the chemistry was there. When they brought in their third comedian friend in Sagalow they captured the lightning in a bottle. They call upon fans to submit scenarios to the group, they are then presented to the trio while recording to elicit a spontaneous response. Regardless of how the answers are approached the listener is rarely ready for what comes next. When the trio does agree on an answer we get ourselves a convoy. The beauty of Here’s The Scenario is in the show’s premise, a simple idea that provides a fertile ground for the trio or any guest to make some easy decisions or dive into the deepest discussion on the silliest of premises. Whether you were a fan since day one or just started listening, its never a bad time to become a fan of the podcast.
Case in point a recent guest appearance by comedian Greg Stone got heated as the crew debated how a giraffe would wear a tie.
Or when comedians H. Foley and Kevin Ryan from the Are You Garbage podcast answered McDonalds to a question that led everyone down a rabbit hole.
The co-hosts are often joined by a variety of interesting and funny guests, including many other comedians who are also big in the New York City comedy scene. A big part of what makes the podcast work as a comedy show is the dynamic between the three hosts and guests when they have one. The show feels like a fun conversation between longtime friends – friends who are comfortable enough with each other to always know how to play off each other perfectly.
Perhaps the funniest moments on the show are when the trio’s friendship drives the conversation. The lighthearted ribbing of each other on personal levels allows for the friendship to take front and center of the show, their clear chemistry gives what any podcast fan wants, authenticity.
It’s because of all this the show is rapidly becoming a destination for other comedians and podcasters to stop by to have a good time. Past guests on the show include the previously mentioned Are You Garbage hosts, Stuff Island’s Tommy Pope and Chris O’Connor, Kerryn Feehan, Ian Fidance, Zac Amico, Sean Patton, and Anthony DeVito have all stopped by the show. The future looks equally as bright as they have recordings with the likes of Ari Shaffir, Rosebud Baker, Jim Norton, Sam Roberts, and Robert Kelly lined up through the rest of the year.
But the trio isn’t only recording in the studio. Live appearances are lined up in the coming weeks including three day a run in Austin, TX at the Vulcan Gas Company September 9-10th (tickets here) an appearance on Kill Tony, and as a festival appearance at the much-lauded Skankfest in October.
So a podcast rapidly growing in popularity hosted by NYC’s next generation of comedic talent, there’s no better time than to make Here’s The Scenario your next podcast obsession.
