There’s a debate that’s happened in stand-up for as long as it became a thing, and that is the question of “are women funny?” While us comedy fans have long answered that question with a resounding “yes,” chauvinism and general shittiness towards women has kept the notion propped up over the year.
A new documentary tackles this assumption with a new FX documentary, Hysterical. Set to make its debut this March at SXSW’s virtual film festival. The film’s director and executive producer Andrea Nevins (Still Kicking, Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie) assembled an all-star cast of women to discuss their lives as comedians and provides an intimate look at what it takes to be a woman navigating that world (our guess is a lot of unnecessary bullsh*t).
The list of comedians included Kelly Bachman, Margaret Cho, Fortune Feimster, Rachel Feinstein, Marina Franklin, Nikki Glaser, Judy Gold, Kathy Griffin, Jessica Kirson, Lisa Lampanelli, Wendy Liebman, Carmen Lynch, Bonnie McFarlane, Sherri Shepherd, and Iliza Shlesinger. Jessica Kirson pulls double duty on the documentary as Executive Producer since she was also the key person to bringing together these comedians.
Hysterical will debut at SXSW in March and air on FX on April 2nd.
