Every political season, there’s always the same question. “What is Saturday Night Live going to do with this?” In the past, when you saw a certain political candidate, you could actually have a good feeling as far as which cast member would portray that person. That was part of the fun.
Well today, SNL announced it’s going to stick with its new tradition of bringing in a big name to portray the Presidential hopeful. Vulture ran an interview with Lorne Michaels ahead of what we can expect from the show’s 46th season, and in it, he revealed who will be playing Joe Biden… Jim Carrey.
“There was some interest on his part,” Michaels explained. “And then we responded, obviously, positively. But it came down to discussions about what the take was. He and Colin Jost had a bunch of talks. He and I as well. He will give the part energy and strength, and … [Laughs.] Hopefully it’s funny”.
In the interview, he also confirmed that Maya Rudolph will be returning as Kamala Harris and, yes, Alec Baldwin will be back into the makeup chair for Donald Trump.
Also, Michaels announced the news of three new featured players. They are Lauren Holt, Punkie Johnson, and Andrew Dismukes, who is currently a member of the show’s writing staff. Additionally, Ego Nwodim has been promoted from a featured player to a regular cast member.
Yes, this season will definitely look different. However, we actually think that a change of pace is never a bad thing. Some of the most creative moments can come out of be situations less than ideal, so we look forward to seeing what the show does with it.
Saturday Night Live returns to 8H October 3rd.
