Last night on W. Kamau Bell’s TV show, Totally Biased Kamau hosted a discussion between Jim Norton and Jezebel.com writer Lindy West. If you aren’t familiar, West has recently began to question comedians and the jokes they make about rape. Many have chimed in on the topic and there’s been plenty written and shared on the subject.
Particularly, within the last year this has been a touchy subject between comedians and critics with very heartfelt debates made between both sides. While last night’s conversation probably didn’t sway the opinions of those that already have them, what it did provide was an arena where at least two people with differing opinions could discuss freedom of speech.
Here’s what aired.
What aired was heavily edited, but the entire clip was posted online and I’d seriously recommend watching that version. Norton and West both make well thought discussions that just didn’t make it to air and are worth the watch. But it should be said that West did manage to call comedy clubs “dark basements full of angry men.” Which I would imagine many would take issue with.
On a side note, when did Jim Norton become the guy to call to defend comedy? For he was just recently on Sean Hannity’s show defending a seemingly trivial Lena Dunham Tweet. Not that he’s not qualified but I reckon he inherited the throne from Patrice O’Neal.
The episode was chock full of great comedians, including Mike Lawrence’s great rant about fast food companies.
And Doug Benson giving some movie advice.
