A while back, we learned about a new biographical series that was in the works about Joan Rivers starring Kathryn Hahn. The series, titled The Comeback Girl, was to follow Rivers during the tumultuous time period in the 80’s when her late night show got canceled by Fox and her husband Edgar committed suicide a month later.
However yesterday it was reported that the series, which was in development at Showtime, has been scrapped. The mini-series was written on spec by Cosmo Carlson, with Greg Berlanti serving as director and executive producer of the series. However producers were unable to secure the life rights for Rivers, which are held by her daughter Melissa.
Now the mini-series could have proceeded as an “unauthorized” project. However that would’ve meant that they wouldn’t be able to use any Joan Rivers jokes or actual quotes in the series, which sort of challenges things. Plus, there would also be the matter of bad press stemming from the Joan Rivers estate. So it probably makes the most sense to just scrap the whole thing.
While we definitely would have loved to have seen this come to fruition, hopefully we can see the story told accurately at some point in the future.
