John Mulaney is headed back to Comedy Central.
Today it was announced that Mulaney will be producing two new specials for the cable network. He will be bringing back last year’s popular John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch for two new specials. One of these specials includes “upcoming holiday-themed special that will reunite the cast from the original hit special.”
“I was an intern at Comedy Central when I was barely older than the kids in the Sack Lunch Bunch,” Mulaney said in a statement. “I wasn’t a very good intern, so I am psyched they hired me again. We are thrilled to bring these specials to Comedy Central, a place where I have had so many good times.”
Added Chris McCarthy, President of Entertainment and Youth Brands for Viacom (and is now looking over Comedy Central), “ We couldn’t be more excited about John’s return to Comedy Central and hope this is just the beginning of a long-standing partnership.”
The most surprising part of this deal is that Netflix is allowing Mulaney to take an original property over to another network. That is something that is pretty rare and has only occurred a handful of times, usually under pressure from fans (see One Day At A Time).
But this news does definitely show promise that Comedy Central is taking a step in the right direction as far as bringing back original programming. It’s no secret that the network has been struggling the last year or two in that department. And more John Mulaney, who last worked with the network back in 2012 for his special New In Town, is certainly only great news!
