More developments on the long-in-production Sam Kinison biography as Josh Gad has signed on to portray Kinison in the biography. What? Josh Gad? The guy from The Book Of Mormon and The Daily Show who is playing Steve Wozniak in the new Steve Jobs film? Well that’s an interesting f*cking choice that I didn’t see coming. Wait! Wasn’t Dan Folger was originally on board for the title role?
Then again, that was originally to be for an HBO flick but now that the movie has been up-streamed to the major leagues, Gad has a bit more notoriety than Folger.
Also new to the picture, Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno, The Dictator) is set to direct the film over Tom Shadyac (Ace Ventura, Bruce Almighty) who was originally set to direct but is still be the movie’s executive producer.
The story will still be based on the book written by Kinison’s brother Bill’s called Brother Sam and writer Rich Wilkes is still said to be writing write the screenplay.
“There was nothing conventional about Sam Kinison and neither will be the cinematic interpretation of his life,” said producer David Permut. “Larry Charles is the perfect director to bring Rich Wilkes’ incredible script to screen, and Josh Gad’s tremendous ability to morph into a role will bring great depth to Kinison’s larger than life persona.” [Deadline]
Gad stated, “Couldn’t be more honored & humbled 2 play Sam. His comedy remains some of the most fearless I have ever seen.”
The film will pick up in the 80’s as Kinison began his rise to stand-up from his Pentecostal preacher history, to become a monster performer on the sunset strip, to being given a shot by Rodney Dangerfield. The film will then dive into Kinison’s drug abuse and the proverbial cleaning up of his act until he was killed in 1992 at the age of 38 from a head-on car collision spawned from a drunk 17 year old kid.
Kinison’s story has a variety of run-ins with colorful characters that producers are working to cast including Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, Oral Roberts, Howard Stern and comedic peers like Richard Pryor.
