For comedy fans waiting on more news on the Just For Laughs festival, they announced some news this morning of what the festival will look like this year.
As previously announced, the Festival will be running from July 26-31 and feature a hybrid of live shows and shows streamed online. However, new for this year, the festival will also be setting up shop simultaneously in the U.S. This is primarily due to travel restrictions between the States and Canada.
In New York, Dulcé Sloan from The Daily Show will host a night of comedy featuring Todd Barry, Michael Kosta, Marina Franklin. In Los Angeles, Sabrina Jalees hosts featuring Yashere, Maz Jobrani, Alonzo Bodden, Jeremy Hotz, Liza Treyger, and Rachel Feinstein. These will be available for free online on July 28th and 29th, respectively.
They’ve also unveiled that Dave Chappelle has been chosen to received the Comedian of the Year award, which we figure has something to do with all the great work he did with his Ohio shows last year, and also because he’s f*cking Dave Chappelle. Additional recipients include Jason Sudeikis and Bill Lawrence of Ted Lasso for Comedy Series of the Year, Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo of Barb and Star Go To Vista del Mar for Comedy Writers of the Year, and Bowen Yang for Breakout Comedy Star of the Year.
“We’re so proud of this year’s award show as we’re starting to come out of what was a really hard time for our comedy community,” said Bruce Hills, Just For Laughs president. “We’re honoring comedy storytellers who entertained and inspired us through this challenging past year. We’re thrilled that for the first time, we are able to invite audiences to join us online. It’s going to be a really great celebration.”
And not to worry. Some JFL staples will also be returning this year. Check out the complete lineup and official descriptions.
