The successor to Stephen Colbert’s 11:30pm Comedy Central spot has been selected. It’s none other than The Daily Show’s Senior Black Correspondent, Larry Whilmore. While we had a feeling the successor would come from within the family ranks of the Jon Stewart / Busboy production camp like they did with Colbert in the first place, Whilmore was just not high on the list of correspondents we thought would be given the nod. With that being said, it’s great choice and like Colbert, offers up a varying viewpoint to what The Daily Show offers.
The Minority Report with Larry Whilmore will begin airing in January 2015 and will supply a “comedic look at news, current events and pop culture from unique perspectives not typically on display in late night television.” As mentioned before, Jon Stewart’s Busboy productions will produce the show and Stewart and Whltmore will serve as Executive Producers. Whilmore will re-locate from Los Angeles to New York where the show will tape.
Jon Stewart stated of the news, “While Larry Wilmore is a brilliant comic and showrunner, this is all just a complicated ruse to get him to move to New York and turn him into a Knicks fan.” Whitmore responded by stating, “I’m beyond excited to have this chance to continue my relationships with Comedy Central and the brilliant Jon Stewart. I love the city of New York and promise to only wear my Laker t-shirts when I’m layering.”
