It’s been canceled twice before, but NBC is reviving it’s popular Last Comic Standing show for an eighth season, this time with Wanda Sykes executive-producing. It’s been reported that the show, which last aired in 2010, will be brought back in the Summer of 2014. While THR says the comedy competition reality show will be executive-produced by Sykes, it notes that a host for the show hasn’t been named yet. Unless they return to someone that hosted it before, the new host will be the show’s sixth. Jay Mohr, Anthony Clark, Bill Bellamy, Fearne Cotton, and Craig Robinson have all hosted the show, which ran for three seasons in 2003-4 before being canceled and revived from 2006-2010. Some of the comedians boosted through appearing on the show include Todd Glass, Rich Vos, Amy Schumer, and Iliza Schlesinger.
With NBC’s original scripted comedy programming struggling to find a larger audience and several of it’s more popular shows having gone away (The Office, 30 Rock), it makes sense for them to bring back both a show that’s both established and not as expensive to produce as a scripted show. Sykes inked a deal with Universal Television’s alternative studio earlier this year. She’s had her own shows (The Wanda Sykes Show and Wanda Does It) and been a memorable guest on Curb Your Enthusiasm. This will mark her first time executive producing.
