During the month of October, Downtown Comedy Club, located in downtown LA is featuring all women lineups to raise awareness for Breast Cancer fund raising and support. I’m very excited to help kickoff the month and perform on the 9PM show this Friday, October 1st. Downtown Comedy Club is known by LA-based comics of all levels as a supportive venue to get stage time without going through the red tape of bringer shows and “stand in line forever” open mics. I chatted with Downtown’s booker and producer, Mo Pollock to bring more awareness to the Club’s breast cancer awareness efforts.
Laura Mannino: So, tell me about the month of October at the Downtown Comedy Club.
Mo Pollock: During the Month of October, the Downtown Comedy Club helps raise awareness for Breast Cancer by featuring female comics the entire month. We partner with different Breast Cancer Groups in the month, some are support groups, some are survivor groups, and sometimes we make a donation to the Susan G. Komen foundation. Our mission really is to spotlight very talented comics. It’s a bonus for us that by doing that, we get to be a part of a very important cause.
LM: How did you come up with the idea to book all women in October to support Breast Cancer awareness?
MP: In the 4 years the club has been open, we have worked with so many amazing comics. We’ve found that our audience really likes funny women and aside from a couple of independent shows, we’d never booked an all female line up. So last year, the owner of the club, Kevin Garnier, and I discussed the idea of booking a “funny chick show,” and we put together a list of the funniest comics that we’ve had play our room. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to do the show in October. I’m a huge believer of the saying “Laughter is the best medicine.” And I believed that if we could get these super funny ladies on a show, we’d get a great response from people who support the cause.
LM: Would you like to mention some comics that will be performing?
MP: Heck Yes!
Vicki Barbolak – October 1st & 2nd
Liz Stewart – October 1st
Jody Ferdig – October 8th
Tracy Locke – October 23rd
Tammy Jo Dearen – October 16th
Shawn Pelofsky – October 22nd & 23rd
Jann Karam – October 23rd
Erin Foley – October 29th
Beth Sherman – October 29th
Paula Bel – October 30th
LM: So tell me a brief history of the Downtown Comedy Club?
MP: Kevin Garnier opened The Downtown Comedy Club in January 2006 in the Historic Alexandria Hotel (it’s the Hotel where United Artists was formed, it’s also where the very first Academy Awards were held). Garrett Morris hosted the very first show, and almost every show since. Almost 5 years later, we’ve moved about half a block away from our original location to our current location at 114 W.5th St.
LM: What’s Downtown Comedy Club’s general schedule?
MP: We have shows every Friday & Saturday night at 8pm and at 9pm. We host an Open Mic showcase once a month at 7pm.
LM: How did you become a comedy producer?
MP: I have been involved with the Downtown Comedy Club since the day it opened. Last year, I pitched the idea of the show to Kevin and he recommended that I produce the entire month. Doing that made me realize the passion I have for putting together a really great show for our audience and our club and I’ve been doing it ever since.
Laura Mannino will be at Downtown Comedy Club on October 1st at 9pm and Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank on October 3rd at 9:30.
