It’s a tall order and a huge task to attempted to answer the question, which city in America is the funniest. Well the gentleman over at The Humor Club set out to find the answer. Dr. Peter McGraw met up with his “Humor Research Team” (or HuRL), which is headed by Adrian Ward and Caleb Warren, in hopes of finding an answer to the funniest city in America. The team created a “Humor Algorithm (HA)” to better measure each city. “The most comprehensive analysis of humorous cities ever attempted” says the study.
The study goes on to explain, “Over a nine-month period, the team collected extensive data for the project.”
The criteria being measured:
- Frequency of visits to Cheezburger comedy websites, such as Lolcats and FAIL Blog
- Number of comedy clubs per square mile in each city
- Traveling comedians’ ratings of each city’s comedy-club audiences
- Number of famous comedians born in each city, divided by city population
- Number of famous funny tweeters living in each city, divided by city population
- Number of comedy radio stations available in each city
- Frequency of humor-related web searches originating in each city
To further find a more precise answer for “The Funniest City in America” the team surveyed more than 900 residents in the top ten cities. The study explains what the survey contained saying, “To glean a deeper understanding of humorous daily life in these cities, researchers quizzed residents on the kinds of funny entertainment they enjoyed, asked whether they looked for humor in their friends and lovers, and subjected them to a “Need for Levity” personality test. Participants also described their city’s sense of humor and recounted their favorite joke.”
So what did they find? The answers may surprise you.
The study’s top ten “Funniest City’s in American”:
1) Chicago, IL
2) Boston, MA
3) Atlanta, GA
4) Washington, DC
5) Portland, OR
6) New York, NY
7) Los Angeles, CA
8) Denver, CO
9) San Francisco, CA
10) Seattle, WA
So there you have it, the apparent top ten funniest cities in America. What do you think? Chicago being number one is pretty appropriate, in my opinion Boston being a number two is a bit of a stretch in my mind but I’ll take it. However, it’s hard for me to believe that Atlanta, Washington, and Portland all beat out New York City. Did someone forget about all of our top comedy clubs (The Stand, Comedy Cellar, Comic Strip Live, Gotham, to name a few) that big name comics such as Tracy Morgan, Louis C.K., Sarah Silverman, Chris Rock, and Dave Attell all stop by on a moment’s notice? Lastly, how about the fact that we play host to countless hit TV shows, including the mecca of comedy, Saturday Night Live. Ok, I’ll be honest, I am totally biased towards NYC but I still think it’s a tough one to beat. Oh well, at least we beat LA.
So I do agree that these are the top ten funniest cities in America, but I don’t think anyone or any algorithm can ever correctly say who is funniest because comedy is all subjective.
What do you guys think? Did they nail it? Or is their list way off? Let us know!
