Update: Despite Taran Killam’s Instagram post insinuating so, The Lonely Island did NOT end up appearing in tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live. Not exactly sure why the comedy trio were mentioned in Taran’s picture (maybe one of the guys directed tonight’s “Blockbuster” short?), but no cameo after all. We’ll keep you posted on any developments of this, but feel free to read our original article/reasoning as to why a guest appearance from The Lonely Island would’ve made sense below.
With Lady Gaga pulling double duty tonight on Saturday Night Live, it seemed likely that a few “surprise” guests would make an appearance. Now it’s safe to say that one of those surprises will come from The Lonely Island.
Taran Killam essentially let the cat out of the bag with a post on his Instagram that included the text “Been awake since 6:30am. Almost at 24 hours. Still shooting. Damn you Lonely Island.” Of course, SNL and NBC are staying mum (likely trying to keep it as a surprise). It’s also unclear as to how much screen time Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccome will get on SNL tonight. However, Killam’s picture makes it seems pretty certain that we’ll at least be getting a new Lonely Island video.
While we can only assume that Gaga will be in the video in some fashion, this wouldn’t be the first time the singer has teamed up with Lonely Island (thanks to her and Justin Timberlake, we learned about the golden rule in three ways). It’s also not the first time that The Lonely Island has popped up on SNL since Samberg left the show, debuting their song with Adam Levine during the episode he hosted.
