So much of what drives these award shows is emotional packed speeches, and this was no different. Unlike last years Emmys that featured an on-air proposal, this one featured something that made all fans of 90’s comedy weep: A tribute to Chris Farley.
Back in May, Adam Sandler hosted Saturday Night Live and performed a tribute song to Chris Farley at the end of the show. This was something that he had done on the road and was featured in his Netflix special, but being back in the studio where they first met, supported by clips of him and Farley in the studio, and one can’t help getting both nostalgic and tearful.
As he walks onstage, the always stoic Michaels delivers a speech that is way more emotionally driven than typical.
”The show that we submitted was a show that Adam Sandler did,” Michaels said in a somber tone. “And in the middle of the show he did a tribute to Chris Farley. And the crew and the cast and everyone who was in the studio, most of whom had worked there when Chris Farley and Adam Sandler were young men… It’s rare that you see the cameramen year up or boom crew crying, but it was a very, very chilling moment and very powerful.”
Needless to say, just as the song had brought us back to that place, we were feeling it all over again.
