Louis C.K. hosted “Saturday Night Live” for a delightfully dark and funny evening

Louis C.K.

Every time its announced that Louis C.K. is set to host Saturday Night Live we get pretty excited. Not only is he one of the finest comedians working today, but he has an uncanny ability to turn darkness into something completely hilarious and brilliant (see Louie, Baskets). While Louis C.K. has always put awkwardness and silliness into his comedy, this episode of SNL seemed to fully capitalize on that side of the comedian. In fact, every time we didn’t have Alec Baldwin on screen, we were treated to something that seemed like C.K. wrote the entire sketch himself. While that’s obviously not true, it did allow for a side of SNL we don’t often get to see. He started the week off with his new stand-up special, 2017 and he ended the week with a fine effort at hosting SNL. So for the fourth time hosting in 5 seasons, here’s Louis C.K.

Cold Open: Trump’s People
It seems all hell broke loose this last week and even longer since we last had a Trump cold open. It’s been weeks since ScarJo hosted the show and a lot of Trumpiness things happened in the time between, like the healthcare debacle, Supreme Court confirmations, and a missile strike. While this sketch decided to have Trump check in with his constituents who seem to be asking the correct questions but not getting the best answers. Is the unwavering support wavering? Well, maybe we’ll find a solution in this sketch.

Monologue
Every time a comedian hosts Saturday Night Live, we’re guaranteed a great 10 minutes of stand-up to kick off the monologue and Louis C.K. is a master. Twice this year, SNL has produced two from masters, while Dave Chappelle’s came at a time of great unrest in this nation, Louis came wrapped in metaphors ranging from general silliness, to racism and white privilege. People take notice, this is what a comedian looks like.

The Lawyer
We kick the night off with a hilariously bizarre sketch, showcasing the sillier side of Louis C.K. He’s always had absurd moments in his comedy and he was able to bring it over to the studio 8H. Justice isn’t blind, it’s Maybeline.

Thank You Scott
This sketch should ring a bit too close to home for many of us. That’s right, we’ve all been Scott at some point or another, and just as many of us have probably been an armchair activist from the toilet.

Soda Shop
The twist in this sketch is what got us most. While we thought we might’ve a funny sketch about a creepy old man turned into a sketch about a kinda creepy young lady who is into some kinky sh*t about manipulating the feels of an older guy.

Pepsi Commercial
With the recent controversy over the Pepsi commercial that featured Kylie Jenner bursting at the seams this weekend, it seems fitting SNL give us a sketch about we all asked ourselves, “what were they thinking?” Well, it turns out that maybe people weren’t thinking and it’s a bit mind-blowing that an idea such as this wouldn’t have prompted at least one person to say, “hey, this might be a bit tonedeaf, maybe we don’t do this?”

The Chainsmokers “Paris”
Ladies and gentlemen, The Chainsmokers. Two dudes that look like they’ve never smoked a cigarette in their lives.

Weekend Update
The last few eps have seen a slimmed down Weekend Update, Che and Jost tossing barbs out about politics of course but they seem to be most comfortable when Che is lobbing jabs at Jost in particular as the Jared Kushner/Colin Jost weed dealer joke is aces. The streamlined portion of the evening comes as they only brought one desk guest on and that would be Cecilia Gimenez, someone close to the recent sculpture of Ronaldo.

The O’Reilly Factor with Donald Trump
While its commendable that Alec Baldwin pulls double duty in this sketch it seems more for kitsch factor than anything else. But that will not stop all of your friends from sharing this sketch tomorrow on the internet.

Birthday Clown
Wow! What a funny, dark and incredibly twisted sketch. This tone is what really spoke for a lot of the night, well any time Baldwin’s Trump wasn’t on the screen. It also helps solidify that though political humor is SNL’s bread and butter, they can really strike gold with left of center material. Such memorable liners like, “there’s no protocol for what this is” and, “you don’t want this!”

Sectionals
And here’s another greatly oddball sketch that we’d probably think was a dud had not it be one that Louis C.K. seemed so excited about. SNL got a bit creative with the camera pull out to reveal LCK rocking some sectionals and it just got weirder from there.

The Chainsmokers “Break Up Every Night”
Once again, The Chainsmokers

Tenement Museum
This sketch was supposed to be an oddball take at turn of the century racism. Rather LCK’s terrible Eastern European accent making Kate McKinnon break just makes the entire sketch a run of smiles. Hell, he gets even a bit Borat-like at the end there. Louie even acknowledges it as he signs off the evening.

And that’s a wrap for Louis C.K. hosting Saturday Night Live. It was a dark and humorous episode that was one of the more enjoyable ones of the season.
