Earlier this year, we talked about the reported plans to bring the Saturday Night Live film MacGruber to Peacock as a new series. The popularity of the film- which didn’t even make back half of its $10 million budget- has certainly increased over the years. The film has maintained an unexpected cult following, and we even saw the cast and crew recounting how the film got made in a big oral history over at Vanity Fair.
Well today, we got the news that there was a straight to series order over at Peacock. Even better, the creatives from the film would be making the leap back to the small screen. And check out the (what can only be categorized as) f*cking crazy synopsis for the new series below.
After rotting in prison for over a decade, America’s ultimate hero and uber patriot MacGruber (Forte) is finally released. His mission: to take down a mysterious villain from his past—Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth. With the entire world in the crosshairs, MacGruber must race against time to defeat the forces of evil — only to find that evil… may be lurking within.
If you weren’t excited before, a plot like that should definitely do the trick!
Forte is returning (naturally) as MacGruber, as well as writer/executive producer alongside John Solomon and Jorma Taccone. Both Solomon and Taccone also helped create the character on Saturday Night Live. Taccone will also direct the series, just as he had the film. Lorne Michaels, Andrew Singer, John Goldwyn, and Erin David will also serve as executive producers of the series. It is also now being reported that Kristin Wigg and Ryan Philippe are in talks to reprise their roles from the film to the series.
No matter who joins the cast, from the sounds of things right now, we’re totally on board!
