All over entertainment news, people have been divided over The Joker. While everyone agrees the performance of Joaquin Phoenix is outstanding, people are divided on how necessary much of the more anxiety and graphic moments of the film are.
What didn’t seem to help matters any was a comment made by Todd Phillips in a Vanity Fair piece.
“Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture,” Phillips said. “There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore—I’ll tell you why, because all the fucking funny guys are like, ‘F*ck this sh*t, because I don’t want to offend you.’”
Well, Marc Maron, as would be expected by anyone who knows Marc Maron, has some comments on this, which were made on the latest episode of his podcast WTF.
“There’s plenty of people being funny right now,” Maron said. “Not only being funny but being really fucking funny. There are still lines to be rode. If you like to ride a line, you can still ride a line. If you want to take chances, you can still take chances. Really, the only thing that’s off the table, culturally, at this juncture –and not even entirely– is shamelessly punching down for the sheer joy of hurting people. For the sheer excitement and laughter that some people get from causing people pain, from making people uncomfortable, from making people feel excluded. Y’know, that excitement.”
Maron is no stranger to his comments catching heat, particularly after being announced to be in the film after traditionally discarding superhero movies in the past. Regardless, from the looks of it, this movie seems like it will continue to take up our news feed for weeks to come.
