A look at Maria Bamford’s Christmas Champ

November 18, 2011      Matt      Features, Maria Bamford, Television, Video

Just the other day we thought, “it’s not the holiday shopping season until we see Maria Bamford in a red velour track suit obsessing over Target,” and sure enough, like clockwork, the Bammer is back on the airwaves.

With Black Friday a week away the promotional push is in full swing and Bamford has the quirk out in full effect. This year for the first time, it appears the character has a named, dubbed the “Christmas Champ” and you can now follow her on Twitter @ChristmasChamp where there’s a world of websites and images of the Champ doing her thing.

The Bammer is now on her 3rd season as the spokesperson. Back in 2009, she helped with the awareness of the chain’s Black Friday’s sales so much it lead to their best sales ever (after a projected bad season). Now she’s returned, continuing the holiday tradition.

The slight difference this year, it’s looking like Target is re-using many of the same clips from 2010. If you’d like to extrapolate the metaphor even further, Target is subliminally telling us to re-gift. There, that’s the ticket.

Who cares really? Bamford is funny as hell in these and we only get to see her for a limited period of time, so deal with it. I’d also rather see Bamford over those holiday hipster ads that were run ad nauseum last season.
