Tonight, there’s a new late night talk show host in town. Comedian Pete Holmes and his late night TV show, The Pete Holmes Show will launch tonight on TBS immediately following Conan as a lead in. Conan has been a fan of Holmes for quite a while and months ago made the announcement that his production company, Team Coco will begin developing a late night vehicle for Holmes.
That wait is over and only one week after Chris Hardwick joined the late night fray with @midnight, and a few months before Seth Meyers assumes the Late Night throne, Holmes will start with his show. And while many comedy fans may already be familiar with the comedian, here’s a quick course to give you an instant knowledge of all things Pete Holmes.
He makes things weird on his podcast
His podcast, You Made it Weird, has evolved into one of the most well known comedy podcasts in existence since its launch on October 25th 2011.
It’s available via the Nerdist network, which brings us to our next point…
He’s in direct competition with one of his bosses
The podcast network Nerdist Industries, was founded by comedian Chris Hardwick, whose successful podcast Nerdist was spawned to celebrate all things Hardwick likes about geek culture. Hardwick is the host of the new late night show @midnight, which launched last week on Comedy Central and will run directly opposite Holmes’ show at (you guessed it, Midnight).
He loves spoofing superheroes
His College Humor seriesBadman, took the self-important seriousness of the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy (especially Christian Bale’s voice) and turned it on its ear. More recently, to promote his show, he’s been spoofing the X Men with his Ex Men clips, appearing as Professor X and firing the superheroes.
He has two great stand-up comedy specials
Both 2011’s Impregnated With Wonder and this year’s Nice Try, The Devil, are must listens. In fact, we called Impregnated one of the best comedy albums of the year, and repeated the claim for his 2013 follow-up.
The Pete Holmes Show debuts tonight at midnight on TBS.
