Saturday Night Live has been making the rounds holding auditions for new cast members for a while, and with many regulars getting long in the tooth or having opportunities with other TV shows and movies, the show’s producers announced the addition of a new featured player.
Meet Kate McKinnon, a UCB Player who in addition to her sketch work has voiced characters for Venture Brothers and Robotomy on Cartoon Network in addition to Comedy Central’s Ugly Americans. She was also picked for an ECNY Award for Emerging Comic in 2010.
Deadline reports that of those that tested for Lorne Michaels in the last few weeks and McKinnon will be the one to make her debut on the show next week (April 7th) when it returns from a Spring Break hiatus and Sofia Vergara hosts.
Kristen Wiig’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season so McKinnon might find herself helping the regulars with the female roles quite quickly if Wiig decides to depart. We also learned during the live taping of Pete Holmes‘ podcast at SXSW that stand-up comedian Kumail Nanjiani (Franklin And Bash) also tried out for SNL but he told Holmes he through it was unlikely he’d join the men on the show.
Congrats Kate and best of luck!
