Well, here’s one of those big changes Lorne Michaels promised would come with season 40 of Saturday Night Live. There there will be a new co-anchor at the “Weekend Update” desk, and that will be the red-hot comedian and former SNL writer, Michael Che. Yes, that Michael Che.
Che, who is currently a correspondent on The Daily Show, will come back to SNL and replace Cecily Strong and join Colin Jost in the Update chair. Strong will remain on the show as a regular cast member. For the first time, Update will have two male co-anchors. Che is also the first black host that’s ever sat at the desk.
After trying out what he said were “a number of different combinations” the last few weeks, Lorne Michaels picked Che to be the partner for Jost, who is currently SNL’s head writer and replaced the vacated seat on Update when Seth Meyers left for late night in the middle of season 39. Che and Jost had a strong behind-the-scenes relationship and that relationship was one of the reasons Lorne Michaels decided to go with Che.
“Michael is a strong writer, and he’s really funny,” stated Lorne Michaels “It’s always difficult to make changes and make Update different from what’s gone before.” Michaels also noted that Strong had to adjust twice to different co-anchors and the SNL mainstay segment struggled to find an identity during that time. Michaels followed up the decision by stating that Strong herself asked to appear more frequently in sketches so the move was good with her. It also means Strong will be able to revive The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation with at a Party character as an Update segment.
Lorne Michaels also stated that he has a few more moves to make before season 40 kicks off. So expect one or two more cast hires/fires (there’s buzz that Michael O’Brien might move back behind the camera as a writer). As expected, after the news broke Che confirmed via Twitter that he would be departing The Daily Show and took the moment to thank them all, “I wanna thank Jon & the entire Daily Show staff for letting me do this. I had a FANTASTIC time there. 1st class all the way.”
He also posted this photo stating, “this might be the coolest tweet I ever got in my life.”
