Mo’Nique announces her first Netflix special after settling lawsuit

July 19, 2022      Andrew Buss      Mo'Nique, News, Specials

It’s been years in the making.

Today, Mo’Nique announced that she will be taping her first special for Netflix. She is expected to film the special – which is presently untitled – in Atlanta later this year.

We say it’s been years in the making because, back in 2019, Mo’Nique actually filed a race and sex discrimination suit against the streamer. In the lawsuit, she said she was given a “lowball” offer, as opposed to what was offered to fellow comedians like Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, and Amy Schumer. At the time, she said she was only offered $500,000 for her special, while Schumer made $11 million for hers and Rock and Chappelle made $20 million for theirs. To many at the time, the filing seemed weird since the suit claimed both race and sex discrimination yet cited another woman and two men of color as the basis of the suit.

The lawsuit was settled last month. So that finally set the stage for the Oscar winner to get her first special with the streamer. I’m sure we’ll hear more information about the special early next year.
