“Monty Python’s Spamalot” finally gets film adaptation greenlit at Paramount

16 years ago, Monty Python made a bit of a resurgence when the Eric Idle penned musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot, debuted on Broadway. The show that “lovingly ripped off Monty Python & The Holy Grail” pretty quickly became a runaway success. So it would stand to reason that there would be a film adaptation by now, no?
All these years later, it looks as if that might finally be coming to fruition. After years stuck in the development stage over at Fox (which was seemingly a result of the Disney acquisition), the project has moved over to Paramount. Idle has written the script (as well as the score alongside his collaborator John DuPrez), with the Broadway show’s director Casey Nicholaw returning to direct the film. Dan Jinks, Jon Gonda, Meg Lewis and Mike Ireland are all on board as producers.
The plan is to have casting underway soon with the film beginning production this year. Being a stage show that isn’t afraid to break the fourth wall, it will be interesting to see how that all translates to film.
