America Ferrera leads the charge in NBC’s new service industry comedy Superstore, which debuts tonight with a one hour premiere starting at 10pm. Those of us who have spent time working in said industry will quickly pick up on each character’s nuances allowing the audience to create an “I-worked-with-that-guy” list a mile long. The environment sets itself up nicely for the type of hi-jinks you’d come to expect from a network sitcom. What sets this particular show apart is the cast. Ferrara, who initially found her way into America’s heart with her breakout role in Ugly Betty, is the center piece in this diverse ensemble cast.
Joining Ferrera is Mad Men‘s Ben Feldman. During his first day on the job at the big-box store, Jonah makes a rough impression on floor manager Amy (Ferrera), and draws the romantic interest of assistant manager Dina, played by Lauren Ash (Another Period). Rounding out the cast are store manager Glenn (Kids In The Hall‘s Mark McKinney), Garrett (MADtv‘s Colton Dunn), Cheyenne (Shameless‘ Nichole Bloom) and Mateo (Nico Santos). The comedy plays current referencing today’s pop-culture such as YouTube phenomenons and college energy drinks allowing the audience to be in the moment. It’s also shot in first person which makes you feel as if you are truly working alongside the team of “Cloud 9,” vest and all.
From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans to the clueless summer hires and the in-it-for-life managers, the team tackles the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions. With a lot of potential and a great lead-in from The Voice, Superstore looks to capture the comedy eyeballs that are eager and out there for something new on NBC.
