After the revelations this week of the sexual misconduct allegations against Christian comedian John Crist, sources connected to Netflix have stated that they are putting his first special with the streaming network, I Ain’t Prayin’ For That, on hold.
The allegations were first brought to attention by Charisma News, a Christian publication, earlier this week. In the article, multiple women accused the comedian of offering free tickets in exchange for sexual favors and shaming them when they decline, using his faith as a way to lure women in and trust him, and attempting to intimidate several women once they turn down his passes.
Having garnered a following on his YouTube channel, Crist was in line to receive his first comedy special on Netflix on the 28th, which is also Thanksgiving. Yesterday, however, sources announced to various outlets that the Special was “on hold”, yet Netflix has yet to come forth with an official announcement.
This is, to our knowledge, the second time that the streaming giant has shelved a comedy special already set to release due to allegations and backlash. The first was back in 2014 with Bill Cosby’s special, Bill Cosby 77, which ironically like Crist’s special, was also set to debut on November 28th.
The resulting allegations had Crist releasing a statement to Charisma News, stating “Over the past number of years, various women have accused me of behavior that has been hurtful to them. While I am not guilty of everything I’ve been accused of, I confess to being guilty of this—I have treated relationships with women far too casually, in some cases even recklessly.“
He goes on to announce that he is cancelling all tour dates and future commitments “in order to devote all my time and energy on getting healthy spiritually, mentally and physically.”
In the piece, it is mentioned that his admittance and seeking help in private dates all the way back to 2014, though this is the first time he’s admitted such publicly.
It will be interesting to see what Netflix has to say about this. Typically they are not known to comment on issues unless it gets very out of hand, so who knows what we can expect from their end.
