In the days before COVID, even right up until the moment before, it was still business as usual. Comics were going up onstage and polishing some of their newest material, not knowing what was about to happen. And that’s exactly what Deon Cole was doing as he took to the stage at the Hollywood Improv, fresh off of his first Netflix special Cole Hearted that was released last October.
And now, we are getting a rare behind-the-scenes look at what goes into crafting these jokes. Netflix has uploaded a “non-special” titled Workin’ It Out onto their YouTube channel that is a compilation of various sets he was doing before the sh*t hit the fan. Thanks to this approach, you can actually see how a set can evolve right in front of you, the changes he makes, the simple changing of a phrase, and the different result you might get because of it.
“This is a raw and unfiltered look at the set Deon Cole was working on prior to quarantine at the Hollywood Improv,” Netflix said in the special’s bio. “This is not a comedy special, it’s a rare and funny look into the craft and development of jokes night after night. We don’t often get to see the inner workings of a stand-up set, and from the mind of Deon Cole, and this is something not to be missed.”
