The rumor mill has it that John Mayer is venturing back into doing stand up. Now before anything else is said it is important to establish the facts about John Mayer.
He himself is funny. You see this one is up to interpretation…
When Mayer first did a few stand up sets people accused him of being sexist, racist, and offensive. While this is completely possible, so were Sam Kinison, Chris Rock, and George Carlin respectfully, and no one bats an eye against them (we’re also not comparing John Mayer to these legends). However, this brings up a good debate – the nature of comedy is to push the envelope and entertain. So is there a double standard set for Mayer because of preconceived notions? After all is it possible to hate someone, yet still find him funny?
The other problem is there really isn’t a lot of video of Mayer’s routine. For all of the accusations lobbed against him, the only two pieces of footage that we could find were from 2006. Now granted he isn’t exactly Bill Hicks at The Comedy Store, but he talks about what he knows and frankly I have seen much worse (though I would tell him to not quit his day job).
Here are the two surviving pieces of John Mayer stand up, personally I don’t hate it. I don’t love it either and I think the crowd gives him bigger laughs than he deserves, but watch the clips and decide for yourself.
