The final episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart countdown began awhile ago, and yes, it’s right around the corner. And ever since that announcement we’ve all been trying to figure out Stewart’s next move. As of last night, there seems to be a new contender entering the ring of possibilities when he showed up at New York’s quintessential comedian hang, The Comedy Cellar, for a 10 minute surprise set. His first stand-up in about a decade.
Stewart went up right after Louis C.K who also showed up unannounced. This is the type of dream lineup you imagine and discuss with your comedy friends. Well, Sean McCarthy of The Comic’s Comic was on hand and recounted the event:
Would Stewart like to go up next? Yes, it turned out. Very much so. Even if he just talked for 10 minutes, the prospect looked too juicy to pass up. Even if he was following CK. Perhaps because he was following CK. It’s fascinating to see and to know that a star goes through the same emotions before, during and after shaking off the proverbial rust of not having gone onstage as a stand-up in far too long.
Albanese agreed with that assessment: “I took this guy to the @nyccomedycellar tonight and he couldn’t resist the mic. The Cellar is where it all began for Jon. This was an awesome moment,” he wrote on Instagram.
There are nights in comedy and then there are these nights in comedy. The special ones. We are happy that the possibility of Stewart being back in the mix is a good one.
