Rachel Bloom has found her follow up to the hit Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which ended its run in April of last year. Yesterday, it was announced that Bloom will executive produce and star in a new pilot for Pop TV Comedy.
The show, Mother Mary, will be a modern, comedic spin on the biblical story of Mary. It is described by Deadline as asking the following question. “What would happen in today’s world if the most irresponsible and lazy human on Earth was impregnated by immaculate conception?”
The pilot is set to star Betsy Sodaro, who also serves as one of the show’s writer’s alongside Bloom, Casey Feigh, and Dan Gregor, as Mary. Bloom will play Christa Anton, also known as the Mother of the Antichrist. The pilot is set to shoot in February with Gregor directing.
“The overall production deal we have with the devil hasn’t born any fruit to date, but when he pitched this show with Rachel Bloom attached, we just couldn’t say no,” Justin Rosenblatt, EVP of Original Programming and Development at Pop TV, said in a tongue-in-cheek statement. “We think Mother Mary is a clever comedy that offers a lot of life lessons that are filled with heart through smart storytelling imparted through Betsy’s hilarious and irreverent sense of humor.”
The premise for this show definitely is intriguing, and we can’t wait to see just how far they can take this idea.
