Nick Kroll dropped into town at NYC’s Gramercy Theatre to show off some of his comedic chops. While Kroll’s latest stand-up act is really f*ckin’ funny, the sold-out venue was fully in for a treat because Kroll previewed clips from his forthcoming sketch comedy show Kroll Show, set to premiere in January 2013 on Comedy Central.
Kroll’s been teasing the show for a while now, putting some advance clips out into the world and teasing the many guest stars and characters. But these were full-blown finished sketches and we’re going to tell you about them now.
**Everything after this will contain spoilers, so if you don’t want to know what’s happening, stop reading now.**
The intro is a collection of other TV show intros as we catch glimpses of classic reworked intros geared toward the Kroll Show. This happens as some really punishing EDM music plays along in the background. I’m not a huge fan of EDM but it works so all hail Skrillex.
A young couple is standing by a packed car and saying their “goodbyes” as she heads off to school. The young man (Kroll) gives her a mixtape (on cassette nonetheless) to remember him by. The lady drives away and puts the cassette into the deck and boom! We’re treated to a full young Jeezy-style DJ mixtape chock full of any cliche’d DJ noises you can think of including airhorn and echoey vocals of Kroll shouting DJ Mixtape things. The young lady then utters that she’s really going to miss him. It’s a funny premise and garners a huge laugh.
Screws is a big box hardware store (a la Lowes) that has a very helpful staff that can help you build anything you can imagine. Then, a couple comes in they look for the help from a clerk for them to build a secret room in their house to hold another human captive. It gets really creepy but funny as hell! The Screws clerk helps them with everything from surveillance gear, peep holes drilling and a door for passing through food. The trio are getting along swell until the clerk is done and tricked/locked into the secret room as the young couple gets their pleasure while looking at him through the a camera. Weird yes, funny as hell though.
Bobby Bottleservice is video chatting with with a girl named Farley and played by Chelsea Peretii. The two start to get really into each other. Talking about what they are looking for in a significant others. As expected Bobby lives with his mother who is interrupting things are Bobby is trying to lay down his game. Peretti is hilarious in this sketch and we hope she shows up more in the show.
The Adventures of Young Billy Joel. Another hilarious sketch as Kroll, dressed as young Bill Joel heads on down to the docks to see Captain Jack. Some of the dialogue is them speaking in Joel lyrics and a turn of events leads him to jump into the water and encounters a water spider? Captain Jack comes in to save the day.
All in all, the show looks hilarious and my descriptions probably don’t do the pacing and fun it offers. Before his last stand-up special, we got the chance to interview Kroll and he stated how he’s a fan of The Muppets and wanted his special to have that feel where we’re just moving around a place and dropping in on people. It suits Kroll’s style well, he loves characters and some really random comedy. Hopefully Kroll Show will retain a lot of those same elements for it will more than likely be a winner if it does.
Best of luck Nick.
