On Friday, we were treated to what can only be described as a super-meta podcast starring everybody’s favorite New Yorkers and Tony Award viewers, George St. Geegland and Gil Fazion. The debut episode is everything you both could hope to expect and could ever want from the likes of the men behind Oh, Hello on Br’dway.
The 8 episode series, Oh, Hello the P’dcast will follow Geegland and Fazion telling the story of the life and death of Princess Diana. Why? We’re not sure, either. But since someone has to tell her life story, who better than these two?
Episode 1 kicks off the series with the following backstory, with their producer reading a statement from George and Gil as if they were holding her hostage.
“Oh, hello,” it reads. “It’s George and Gil, your favorite guys in the world and also New York, which is an awesome city, but not as good as it used to be, because of Mayor DiBlasio and the Knicks, who stink. We are in mandatory self-quarantine right now, but we think what the world needs is a podcast from us, George and Gil: the bad boys of broadcast. It’s time we finish and air this podcast. The very fact that we have content banked means we are miles ahead of the competition. Even a half-finished podcast that almost ruined our friendship is more than you dunces have out there in nobodyville. We’re gonna win the quarantine. And one last thing: you’re welcome.”
What follows is 16 minutes intro to why they are doing this, where they were on August 1st 1997, trying to get Ira Glass on board, getting John Oliver and Lin Manuel-Miranda on board, re-enacting the paparazzi chase, visiting a medium, and what Pete Davidson would tell Princess Di.
George and Gil hosting a p’dcast is reminiscent of trying to help your parents set up their zoom account. There’s going to be a lot of struggles to get there, but sooner or later, we’ll most likely be exactly where we want to be. And that’s why we are so excited this p’dcast is a thing.
