Tonight is the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards. This year’s celebration of the best in television will be hosted by NBC’s new golden goose, Late Night host Seth Meyers. Awards will be given out to the TV (and Netflix’s) biggest comedies and dramas. But who gives a sh*t about the dramas; Breaking Bad is over, HBO has dragons, that’s all we need to know.
We decided to pick out our picks for who should take home some gold today, and who the voters probably messed up with and actually will give the trophy too.
Let’s break down this year’s ballot:
LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Lena Dunham, Girls
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Taylor Schilling, Orange is the New Black
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
Julia Louise Dreyfus, Veep
Well, well, look what we have here. The usual crop returns, this time with Taylor Schilling as the newbie. OITNB isn’t quite a comedy, it’s more of a dramedy and I think that will knock out Schilling. Poehler continually gets snubbed, but this year her character went through many big changes. However, I think Dreyfus will return a champ. Sadly, award shows are pretty predictable. Hence.
Our Pick: Amy Poehler
Prediction: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Ricky Gervais, Derek
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Don Cheadle, House of Lies
Louis C.K., Louie
William H. Macy, Shameless
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
Gervais is kind of a wild card, but his shows always do very well with audiences and critics. Parsons beat out the group last year, but the return of Louie might put the Emmys in his favor. This is a close one.
Our Pick: Louis C.K.
Prediction: Ricky Gervais
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Allison Janney, Mom
Kate Mulgrew, Orange is the New Black
Kate McKinnion, Saturday Night Live
Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory
Anna Chlumsky, Veep
Last year’s winner, Merritt Wever, is not back to defend her title. Everyone on this list lost to her last year except for McKinnion and Janney. McKinnion has become the new support beam on SNL, and has just taken over that show. It’s a rare thing for someone who’s been over there for such a short time get so many nominations, period. Of course, Emmys do not favor SNL. I’m guessing Mulgrew will pull a wildcard win, or Bialik will continue to rake it in for the overrated Big Bang Theory.
Our Pick: Kate McKinnion
Prediction: Mayim Bialik
Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Adam Driver, Girls
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Fred Armisen, Portlandia
Tony Hale, Veep
Driver’s performance on Girls has been critically lauded ever since the show started. Hale returns as the reigning champ, and Braugher enters the fray this year for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Considering how well B99 did their first time around, I wouldn’t be surprised with Braugher takes this one home. Really though, this one is anyone’s game.
Our Pick: Fred Armisen
Prediction: Andre Braugher
