Rachel Dratch’s Late Night Snack changes up the sketch comedy game

Saturday Night Live’s darling Rachel Dratch throws on some waitress gear and treats us to 30 minutes of original comedy in truTV’s Rachel Dratch’s Late Night Snack. The series, which premieres tomorrow night, will showcase never-before-seen comedy bits on a variety of topics. Like your favorite local diner, there’s something for everyone here.
From mockumentaries, music videos, animation and scripted pieces, Late Night Snack is a blend of SNL’s digital shorts and Drunk History. Though it’s “late night”, the variety isn’t R-rated (as of yet, anyway) and what you see is a throwback to Laugh In or something involving Carol Burnett. Dratch is silent throughout the episode, simply pouring coffee, handing out menus, and transitioning us from one sketch to the next. Everything is pre-recorded and no laugh tracks are involved. Simply put, this isn’t like other sketch comedy shows on television right now.
The first episode includes a short piece about two young people buying condoms, a screen-test for a fake television show, Jayma Mays explaining Little Red Riding Hood via animation, and more; all surrounding a series of shorts about really happened before the first person walked on the moon.
TruTV at 11p tomorrow. Go on, try a bite.
