Richard Lewis announces Parkinson’s diagnosis, retires from stand-up

April 24, 2023      Andrew Buss      Features, News, Richard Lewis

Comedian Richard Lewis has had a rough few years. From a back surgery to a shoulder surgery, Lewis has talked about these struggles in the past. Now, he’s opening up about a new diagnosis.

Last night, Lewis took to Twitter with a video message addressing when he’s returning to stand-up. In the video, he announces that he has officially retired from stand-up. He was on the road a few years ago, and decided that he wanted to end the tour midway through, when he was at the “top of my game.”

He also talks about the fact that – in addition to his four surgeries back-to-back – he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease two years ago.

Lewis says, “But luckily I got it late in life and they say you progress very slowly if at all and I’m on the right meds so I’m cool.”

“I just wanted to let you know that’s where it’s been at,” he wrapped things up by saying. “I’m finished with stand-up, I’m just focusing on writing and acting. I have Parkinson’s disease but I’m under a doctor’s care and everything is cool. I love my wife, I love my little puppy dog and I love all my friends and my fans. And now you know where it’s been at the last three and a half years. God bless you.”

Lewis just finished filming the 12th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which hopefully we can expect to see come out sometime this year!
