Rick Moranis reveals details about the “Spaceballs” sequel that never happened, has a new comedy album

June 25, 2013      Phil Rothermich      Movies, Music, News

Lord HelmetRick Moranis, made famous for starring in classic comedy movies in the ’80s and ’90s like Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (and the many sequels to it), and Big Bully. Then, of course is arguably his most notable, cult classic 80s film, Spaceballs. The film was an slow-growing hit and has remained popular among comedy and science fiction lovers alike.

Mel Brooks, Thomas Meehan, and Ronny Graham wrote the 1987 Star Wars parody. Mr. Mel Brooks also directed and stared in the film. Other stars included Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, and the legendary John Candy. Not to mention Joan River’s voice was also in the flick. Needless to say if you call your self a comedy fan and you have not seen the movie, you are not a comedy fan.

With all the success and the huge cult following of the film many wonder, will there ever be a sequel? How about even a prequel? Or even just something related! Well Rick Moranis finally addressed the subject. Moranis recently spoke to Heeb Magazine about his life and he revealed details about the sequels and if there were a future in them. “Mel wanted to do a sequel after [Spaceballs] became a cult video hit,” Moranis continued. “It wasn’t a box office hit. It was a cult video hit, and MGM wanted to do a sequel. And my idea for it was Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II…But the deal he presented me, what he wanted me to do, was not workable. It was two or three years later…It’s better if I don’t get into the particulars of it…But I was unable to make a deal, and it would have been something I wanted to do.”

Rick also addresses the rumors about a possible Ghostbusters 3 but says he wouldn’t commit until he would get to see everything presented to him. Understandable since Ghostbusters 3 has been a rumor since 1989 when Ghostbusters 2 was released.

These days Rick seems to be content with keeping a low profile. However he did just release his comedy CD My Mother’s Brisket & Other Love Songs. Give it a listen and hear Moranis’ parody some classic Yiddish tunes.
