“Dolemite is my name and rapping and tapping is my game.”
Considered by some to be the “godfather of rap” and fresh off of te Eddie Murphy’s biopic Dolemite is my Name based on his life, now Dolemite can be your name, too. Some of the master recordings from Rudy Ray Moore’s legendarily risqué comedy albums are all up for auction.
Moore first rose to prominence after he released his first comedy album in 1970 titled Eat Out More Often. The album featured a new character Moore created named Dolemite and featured dirty jokes and a persona that Moore adopted from a local wino named Rico. The album became a hit, and turned Moore into an underground figure. Moore followed this up with two other albums, This Pussy Belongs To Me and The Dirty Dozens. The albums combined jazz and R&B with a band backing up Dolemite’s jokes.
The legend of Moore was further cemented when he made his leap to the big screen in the cult hit film Dolemite. This was followed by other films that include The Human Tornado, The Monkey Hustle, Petey Wheatstraw: The Devil’s Son-in-Law, and Disco Godfather.
“As a kid under the age of 10, I used to sneak and listen to Rudy Ray Moore on 8-track tape in my older brother Randy’s lowrider car; I’d be laughing so hard; I clearly remember those days,” said Donald H. Randell, Moore’s manager who is even working on his own Rudy Ray Moore documentary and cartoon series. “I’m so blessed to have worked with Rudy for so many years, to have helped lift him up when he was down, and to have seen the unfiltered Rudy Ray Moore with my own two eyes.”
“Randell is offering fans of Moore’s over-the-top characters and performances a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a piece of the comedy canon,” said Sean Peace, President of SongVest, who is handling the auction. “The new owner of these masters have an awesome opportunity to breathe new life into Rudy’s comedy and bring in brand-new audiences that will significantly increase the value.”
The auction is taking place now through September 10th. You can bid on the collection here.
