Sacha Baron Cohen officially cancelled himself last night.
At the MTV Movie & TV Awards, Sacha Baron Cohen was awarded the Comedic Genius award. On hand to accept the award was two of Cohen’s signature characters, Borat and Ali G. Eventually, Cohen himself came out and asked both to leave. “Is it because I was black,” Ali G asked. “You’re not black,” Cohen corrected him. “You’re a white suburban kid who’s co-opting black culture.” And once another characters left Cohen to accept the award, he was further interrupted by two more creations of his: Bruno and Admiral General Aladeen. At the end, he proclaimed “Before anyone else does it, I am officially cancelling myself.”
And as he previously claimed that he wouldn’t be doing another hidden camera/prank film after Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, the speech felt like the end of the road for Borat, Ali G, and Bruno.
