Last month, we reported that Sacha Baron Cohen was spotted driving through California dressed as Borat. This was the first time he donned the character since 2016, so we weren’t sure what exactly it meant. Additionally, Cohen has pranked a right wing rally in Washington earlier this summer, and also pranked Rudy Giuliani, who called the cops on him. Well now it is all starting to add up.
Collider has reported that Cohen has already completed and is beginning to privately screen a sequel to 2006’s Borat. Details are incredibly vague at the moment, but word is that the character Borat became so big after the first movie that he now has to go undercover to conduct his interviews. Essentially, it is described as being “Cohen playing Borat playing Cohen”. Definitely a pretty meta approach, but hey, we could definitely imagine how this might work.
There is no word as far as further plans for the film. Given that Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox (who released the first film), there’s a good chance they wouldn’t be putting an unconventional Borat sequel high on their list of priorities, especially this year. After all, given how many lawsuits Cohen and the character have received in the past, it definitely wouldn’t surprise us if others followed suit. Case and point, Alabama politician Roy Moore’s $95 million lawsuit against Cohen and Showtime is still active as of June. This is relating to an interview Cohen did with Moore two years ago on This is America that involved an infamous gag device that could detect a pedophile.
Wherever the Borat sequel winds up, this is definitely something we’re looking forward to!
