About a year ago, Saturday Night Live gave us an instant classic sketch called, “Papyrus.” In the sketch Ryan Gosling is haunted by the fact that Avatar, a huge international blockbuster used the font Papyrus and nobody said anything about it… truly frightening. The sketch came from the brain of stand-up comedian and SNL writer Julio Torres and was 1) not only an incredible observation but also 2) translated into such a great sketch with Gosling nailing a man with such a tortured soul.
Well, it appears that not only has the world seen the video (currently nearing 8M views just on Youtube) as James Cameron might’ve also seen the sketch. This week they released the logo for the next run of Avatar films (Cameron plans on releasing 4 soon) and it appears that the graphic design person responsible for this logo didn’t just casually highlight Avatar, click the dropdown menu, and randomly select Papyrus like a thoughtless child like the previous designer did.
Congrats Julio and SNL for helping right this wrong. And thanks to the Papyrus font for being tribal yet futuristic.
