We’re back! TV’s back! Saturday Night Live is back! After taking the summer off, the show is bright eyed and bushy tailed with season 38. Head honcho Lorne Michaels made some moves during the hiatus, hiring some n00bz as he said goodbye to some vets. What would season 38 look like without Kristen Wiig? Will the Digital Short live on without Andy Samberg? Will we switch our indie crush to Nasem Perdrad since Abbey Elliot is no longer around?
A lot happened over vacation, the Olympics, RNCs, DNCs, countless new songs, Ted, The Dark Knight, Honey Boo Boo. There’s a well of topics that the SNL writers can dip into to kick the season off. Recruiting Seth MacFarlane to be the first host of the season is a good call as he’s a multi-talented writer (see Sunday night on Fox), voiceover actor (see Ted), and recording artist (we’re going to hear him sing). The crop of past featured players are now cast regulars and with that come some new featured members. Let’s get the first glimpse of them and see how Seth did shall we?
Cold Opening: Obama vs. Romney
We’re off to the races. Earlier this week Lorne announced that Jay Pharoah would be doing the Obama impressions this season. I was never a huge fan of Fred Armisen’s Obama, it got the job done but watching Pharoah do it shows what we were missing. Enter Pharoah’s Obama and some great plays on Mitt Romney’s awkwardness.
Seth MacFarlane Monologue
Here we go monologue! Here we go! Some quick voice impressions from Family Guy here, a song there, no mention of The Cleveland Show and bipitty-boom you got yourself a monologue!
