Leave it to David Letterman to start a ridiculous late night television tradition that’s equal parts f*cking with you as it is congratulating you. Case in point the “Late Night” passing of the pickle.
The story goes that Letterman, who started the Late Night show passed along a giant pickle to Conan O’Brien when he took over as the host of the show. Conan has since held onto the pickle in office and made the appropriate hand off to Fallon when Fallon took over. Now, as is tradition, Fallon put the pickle into the good hands of Seth Meyers to keep it around their office for good luck. Whether or not it’s really a thing started by Letterman, it’s not a Late Night tradition and a nice brief symbol of the changing of the guard.
“I don’t know if I have room for it.” Meyers stated. “Hold back the emotion!” Fallon warned him as he released the pickle to Meyers.
Uprxx recalled a video of Fallon first receiving the pickle 5 years ago with the attached note.
The Letterman people sent this pickle to my office in 1993, just before I went on the air. They said it’s been in their office since the beginning and now they were passing it on to me. So now I am passing it on to you. Whenever you’re done, which won’t be for a long time, make sure you pass it on to the next sap.
