In January of 2021 a the Subreddit r/wallstreet bets led a grassroots effort and took on billionaire hedge fund managers with a short squeeze of the stock for the video game store company, GameStop. It was a wild few weeks with average joes taking on Wall Street and winning.
SONY Pictures is releasing a movie Dumb Money based on the events that took place in what seems like a kindred spirit movie to the 2015 Adam MacKay film, The Big Short. In the film Paul Dano portrays a Youtuber who gets the ball rolling on the popular message board.
The film has a stacked ensemble cast featuring Pete Davidson, Nick Offerman, Seth Rogen, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, and Shailene Woodley.
It’s a classic David vs. Goliath tale that makes you want to root for the little guys as you watch the story unfold. Which got so wild, it led to freezing of trading platforms and even some Congressional testimony.
Dumb Money is directed by Craig Gillespie and based on the book The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich.
The film hits theaters on September 22nd.
