You may remember last October when the sad news broke of the passing of Marcia Wallace, the voice behind Simpsons regular Edna Krabappel. Wallace had been battling breast cancer since 1985 and had sadly lost the battle after 28 years. Soon after, The Simpsons quickly paid a subtle tribute to Wallace with Bart writing “We’ll really miss you Mrs. K,”on the chalk board during the show’s intro on November 3rd.
While that was certainly touching, it still didn’t feel like it was enough considering Edna Krabappel had been a regular character on the show since the beginning. So it was no surprise when The Simpsons said farewell once more, this time with a more thought-out tribute.
As last night’s episode rounded out it’s storyline, we suddenly saw Ned Flanders and Edna together in a dance hall. After a few quick quips, the couple began dancing. After a stunning toss by Ned, Edna let out her famous cackle of a laugh prompting Ned to wake up from an apparent dream in his living room. “Sure do miss that laugh,” said Ned wearing a black memorial armband, gazing into a portrait of Edna beside him. Bully Nelson then popped up to reply with his own signature laugh, punctuated by a somber “I miss her too,” before the show faded to a silent black.
Needless to say, it was a classy, heartfelt way to say goodbye to one of their most beloved characters.
