About an hour ago, Stephen Colbert and The Colbert Report signed off for the last time. It’s bittersweet and we’re already imagining the think pieces that we’ll read these next few weeks breaking down the cultural relevance of a show that started off as a singular joke and lasted nine glorious years. Colbert and many celebrities and show luminaries joined the host on stage for a singalong to the Vera Lynn song “We’ll Meet Again”. as we know, Colbert is set to replace David Letterman on The Late Show when Letterman retires this May.
Politicians like Bill DiBlasio and Elliot Spitzer. Jon Stewart, The Muppets, Bryan Cranston, Michael Stipe (who sold yesterday in a yard sale for 25 cents), James Franco, Jeff Tweedy, Randy Newman, Bill Clinton, Willie Nelson, Katie Couric, Jeff Daniels, Patrick Stewart, Alex Trebek, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and Cyndi Lauper all took part in the send off.
And here’s the official sign off.
