Here it is, our final night in Austin and it’s a big one for comedy, with an admitted diversion off the beaten path to catch Bruce Springsteen and the E. Street Band for an intimate performance across town. Hey! It can’t be all the comedy all the time.
Our day started as it should… with booze. The crew from the TV show Workaholics just got into town and they wanted some drinks, so we tug along with them to Iron Works BBQ where they sat down with comedian Dan Soder for a quick Q&A about the 3rd season of the show for Slacker Radio. The guys then did a few more interviews as we darted off to the NEXT Stage at the Convention Center for the Stand Up! Records showcase which included sets by Brooke Van Poppelen, Ryan Stout, and Brendon Walsh.
Then after a brief Bruce Springsteen hiatus, it was back at Esther’s Follies to catch the TuneIn showcase whose lineup featured Jessi Klein, Louis Katz, Andres du Bouchet, and Mike Birbiglia. Birbgs had been in town all week showcasing his film version of his play, of his book, of his album Sleepwalk With Me. We were not able to catch the film this time around thus keeping our streak of missing all the good films at SXSW alive.
In between shows, we hung with Louis Katz, Andres du Bouchet, and Nick Turner as we up with the fine folks at 24/7 Comedy and The Spit Take before settling in for Set List with Paul Provenza and Troy Conrad.
You ask how one closes a night of comedy like that? Why 1am Sliders outside of Esther’s while the thumping bass of Big K.R.I.T. wafts through air from a 3 story Doritos vending machine stage in the background of course!
