January 11, 2021      Andrew Buss      Features, In Memoriam

After a year that featured so many setbacks and hardships to the comedy community comes another sad blow. Jeff Scott, who served as the pianist and archivist for The Comedy Store since 1995, has passed away.

Originally from Ohio, Scott had become a welcome presence behind the keys for audiences and comics alike over the last 25 years. It is often said that he knew more about the legendary venue than anyone else. And since news broke this morning, the comedy community have all taken to social media to share some of their favorite memories of Jeff Scott from over the years.

RIP to @TheComedyStore pillar Jeff Scott. I loved him. I loved his deep appreciation of the history of the Store and before that Ciro’s. I loved improv’ing w him as he played me on and off stage. I loved his laugh. I truly enjoyed his company. I’ll miss him. #RipJeffScott pic.twitter.com/ZEpak8Jkyv

Jeff Scott was not only the house piano player @TheComedyStore he was also my friend. Because I often opened the OR he would introduce me. No matter how many credits I acquired he always brought me up as “she performs regularly here as well as our club in La Jolla California

The Comedy Store and all of us who have been lucky to perform there just lost a great friend. The house pianist and Comedy Store historian, Jeff Scott. He was always there. Always smiling. He leaves such a void in our comedy community.

Jeff Scott, Comedy Store Legend RIP
Jeff was as integral to @thecomedystore as the stage and microphones. He was such a warm, kind person with immense talent. I will truly miss him. One last time, let’s give it up for Jeff Scott. pic.twitter.com/ZvZM9Y4e8y

Jeff Scott was my favorite person to talk to at @TheComedyStore. He was so warm and welcoming and during those sometimes tough opening Original Room spots his laughter meant everything. Sending love to all who knew him, I will miss him ❤️ pic.twitter.com/AToZZKRdpb

RIP Jeff Scott, pianist at @TheComedyStore. I am gutted. He always made a point to walk over to me and throw me some kind of hilarious shade, then we’d both laugh and hug. I’ll miss you, friend

I’m truly heartbroken at the passing of @JeffScott101 He was an ENORMOUS part of @thecomedystore you can’t think of one without the other. He was talented, kind & of course FUNNY. The Store will never be the same. “Everyone please keep it going for Jeff Scott on the keyboards” pic.twitter.com/pzGq3shW2Q

Shit news. Legendary pianist for @TheComedyStore, Jeff Scott passed away yesterday. He was part of the experience and was always very kind to me. This sucks.

. @TheComedyStore is a more than a standup institution. It is a big part of comedy’s past, present, and god willing, the future. It’s strange, ugly, comfortable and beautiful all at the same time like your favorite sweater. When you put it on it’s comfortable like no

RIP Jeff Scott. He had the best stories out of anyone at @thecomedystore and the best Halloween costumes too. A kind, sweet man who gave his heart and soul to that club and helped make shows in the Original Room as special as they are.
