Last night in Los Angeles, CA, we were able to take in one of the left coast’s most buzzed about shows, The Goddamn Comedy Jam. The perfect blend of comedy and music. Not to be confused with musical comedy, this show embodies the best of both worlds merging the two into a celebration of both mediums not through irony, but honesty. We’ve all heard the saying, “Every comedian wants to be a rockstar.” Well, it’s true. And that is clearly the case at this show when every comic on the bill does a stand up set followed by singing a song with the house band, Elemenopy, which they chose when they were booked, with no rehearsal. And the result is magical. A room with an organic energy that can only be created when the comic delivers their personal story about the song they are about to perform. This one of a kind show is brought to you by the host and singer, Josh Adam Meyers, and takes place at The Lyric Theater. The show only happens once a month, because that’s enough time for you to recover.
On the bill on this particular night were Michael Kosta, Iliza Shlesinger, Jay Larson, Brent Morin and special guest Dane Cook. The song performances touched all genres of music from Hip-Hop to Classic Rock with the fantasy of performing The Beastie Boys, Van Halen and Young MC being lived out by the comics – some nervous – who stepped out of their comfort zone and brought the crowd to their feet. The night was then capped off by a group participation rendition of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home”. The perfect ending to the evening. Next time you are in L.A. or if you happen to live there now, we can’t recommend this show enough. Your future self thanks you!
Here’s an image of the scene backstage after the show closed out. All attendees were invited to be a part of the post show celebration. All eyes were on the group photo being taken of all the performers from the bill.
